Aveling & Porter was a British agriculture steam engine & steam roller manufacturer.


Thomas Aveling & Richard Thomas Porter entered partnership in 1862, developing steam engines in 1865 producing more steam rollers than all the other British manufacturers combined. 


Thomas Aveling was born in Cambridgeshire in 1824 he was an apprenticed to a farmer. In 1852 Aveling's interest in engineering led him to set up business in Edward's Yard, Rochester with his farther in law producing and repairing agricultural machinery.


In 1865 Aveling & Porter produced a steam roller which proved a huge success. 


Aveling & Porter steam rollers were exported over Europe also as far afield as India and North America. 


In 1919 Aveling & Porter joined Agricultural & General Engineers (AGE). Production of Aveling & Porter steam wagons was transferred to Richard Garrett & Sons. In 1932 AGE went into Receivership bringing down Aveling & Porter with it. 


In 1933 Aveling & Porter combined with Barford & Perkins to form Aveling - Barford which then stated to continue to manufacturer steam and motor rollers.


After World War II the company still continued to manufacturer steam rollers as well expanding in to other construction equipment.
